Alice Aguilar, she/they, is Executive Director of Progressive Technology Project (PTP), a non-profit social justice movement technology organization with an organizing model to help movement organizations transition off of Big Tech and use people-controlled technology. PTP's mission is to strengthen grassroots organizing groups to achieve their goals through the strategic use of technology while helping groups develop a critical and political analysis for all their technology decisions. PTP offers an open-source database, Powerbase, designed and developed with community organizers, and hosted on servers we own and control.
For nearly 30 years, Alice has focused much of their life’s work in supporting indigenous people’s rights, environmental justice, and reproductive justice issues. Alice’s current work involves leading the fight against racism and sexism in technology and to bring women, queer and Trans people of color into technology and win respect for the people of color already doing technology work within social justice movements.
My vision for May First Movement Technology is multi-faceted. I envision May First in providing critical technology infrastructure for the movement that's designed, developed, and people-controlled as we help movement groups and activists divest and move away from Big Tech. May First commitment to operating as a coop is a key step in creating a more democratic process to decision making that’s inclusive of member engagement as we collectively move the direction of our work that supports the needs of our movements. May First is a strategic movement partner in bringing together activists and self-identified "techies" to tackle the question of the role of technology and the roles of technologists and activists in the future of our movements, the future of humanity, and our future relations to this planet and its beings.
